Which CAD file format for which manufacturing process

Sending the wrong format is the most common first-order mistake. Here is the short map.

STEP

A precise 3D solid model. Use it for CNC machining and any process where the factory needs exact geometry.

DXF and SVG

Flat 2D outlines. Use them for laser cutting, waterjet cutting and plasma cutting. Check that units and scale are correct in the file.

STL and 3MF

Triangle meshes for 3D printing. Fine for prototypes, not suitable as a master file for machining.

Gerber and BOM

The standard output for circuit boards: copper, mask and drill layers plus a parts list for assembly.

The rule

Keep the code as your master. Export the format each process needs, every time, from the same source.
